Santa Cruz Structure Fire Press Release

On August 8, 2012, the El Dorado Hills Fire Department received a dispatch for a landscape type fire off of Santa Cruz Court.  The homeowner called 911 after a family member reported the side yard was burning.  They later found that the roof was also burning.  Prior to EDHFD’s arrival, the incident was upgraded to a roof fire of the home.

Units arrived to find a 25% involved roof with major attic involvement and the family had safely evacuated the home.

This was a challenging fire due to the wood shake roof and the weather conditions.  The wood shake roof was putting embers into the air exposing the adjacent structures as well as exposing the open vegetation between El Dorado Hills and Folsom.  The hot temperatures, low humidity and light winds from the North added to the potential fire spread as well as increased fatigue to the crews.

The fire on the roof was dampened and the crews pulled ceiling inside of the home to get to the seat of the fire for extinguishment.  Much of the garage roof and portions of the house roof collapsed due to the fire damage.  Many personal belongings were saved due to aggressive salvage operations.

The fire is still under investigation but appears to have started in the landscaping, traveling to the wood fence that burned to the house, getting into the attic.

Units from El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Latrobe, Folsom and CAL FIRE responded to the incident.
