Fire extinguishers can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the Fire Department arrives.
NFPA Safety tips
- Use a portable fire extinguisher when the fire is confined to a small area, such as a wastebasket, and is not growing; everyone has exited the building; the fire department has been called or is being called; and the room is not filled with smoke.
- To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:
- Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism.
- Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
- Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.
- For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire, but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle.
- Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory.
- Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. Local fire departments or fire equipment distributors often offer hands-on fire extinguisher trainings.
- Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately.
- Know when to go. Fire extinguishers are one element of a fire response plan, but the primary element is safe escape. Every household should have a home fire escape plan and working smoke alarms.
If your fire extinguisher is in need of servicing or replacement, we cannot recommend any specific company but you can google a local business that can help service your extinguishers. If you choose to replace your fire extinguisher instead of servicing it, you can find them at a local store (Home Depot, Costco, Walmart, etc.). The minimum requirement for a commercial business is a 2A:10B:C fire extinguisher. We also recommend this same type of fire extinguisher for residential use.
If you are needing to dispose of your old fire extinguishers, please visit the Household Hazardous Waste collection program webpage.
The El Dorado Hills Fire Department would like the business owners of our community to be aware of fraudulent companies trying to service the fire protection equipment of their businesses. Local businesses have been victims of a uniformed citizens claiming to be Fire Department representatives who insist on conduction "Fire and Life Safety Inspections" or servicing fire protection systems unnecessarily and without proper credentials. These companies are billing business owners for alleged services provided and are aggressively and persistently trying to collect. View Fraud Awareness document for more information.
WHAT IS THIS FEE?
The State Responsibility Area (SRA) Fire Prevention Benefit Fee was enacted following the signing of Assembly Bill X1 29 in July 2011. This fee is imposed by the State of California and not by the El Dorado Hills Fire Department. The law approved the new annual Fire Prevention Fee to pay for fire prevention services within the SRA.
The fee is levied at the rate of $150 per habitable structure, which is defined as a building that can be occupied for residential use. Owners of habitable structures who are also within the boundaries of El Dorado Hills Fire District will receive a reduction of $35 per habitable structure.
CAL FIRE fee bills are due to be mailed to El Dorado County property owners starting the first week of September. The State Responsibility Area Viewer allows users to view the spatial distribution of SRA at different scales and for different areas of the state. It can also be used to search for a specific address to help determine if someone is in or out of SRA.
For more information about the Fire Prevention Fee, please visit: www.FirePreventionFee.org or call 1-888-310-6447.
